Born Ana Theresia Hontiveros, on February 24, 1996, Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel was married to the now deceased Fransico Baraquel Jr. who was the former operations manager of the Philippine National Police Service Stores System. She had four children with Fransico who she still raises. Hontiveros studied at St. Scholastica’s College Manila-Grade School in 1979 and secondary education in the same school, eventually graduating in 1983. While a senior in high school, Risa Hontiveros became actively involved with the Nuclear Disarmament Group. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences in 1987 from Ateneo de Manila University and also a Diploma Course in Managing Arts Program from the Asian Institute of Management in 2004.
Risa Hontiveros has appeared on television at a young age and became co-host for Street Pulse on RPN from 1986 to 1987. She went on to become a co-host for multiple other networks and eventually News Anchor at GMA Network News. Afterwards she became Secretary-General of the Coalition for Peace in 1988 to 1992 and member of the National Peace Conference in 1990. She began her political career by representing the AKBAYAN partylist in 2004 and apart of many committees as a member of the Minority.

Running under Team PNoy, Risa Hontiveros’ agenda mainly focus on a position for the introduction of Divorce for the Philippines, as well as being for the Anti-Political dynasties bill. This bill would ensure that “The State shall guarantee equal access to public service and prohibit political dynasty as may be defined by law.” Among the other agendas there is also the passage of Universal Health Care which has been supported by all candidates.
