Born Maria Lourdes Sombilao Binay, currently 39 years old, Nancy Binay is the daughter of incumbent Vice President Binay and former Makati Mayor and medical doctor Elenita Sumbilao Binay. She is also sister of current Makati Mayor Jun Binay and Rep. Abigail Binay. Her youngest sister is Annie, though not in an elective position. Nancy Binay is married to Pepito Angeles and has four children. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism from the University of the Philippines-Dilman.
A current senatorial candidate for the 2013 elections, Nancy Binay has grown up mainly in the personal assistant role for her parents before becoming the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nationalist Alliance. Nancy also currently holds the position of Executive Director and Member of the Board of Trustees of Bigay Pagmamahal Foundation, Member of the Board of Trustees of Brighthalls Children’s Foundation, STF Serbisyong Tunay Foundation, Inc., and JCB Foundation.
Although she ranked fourth among possible senatorial winners in the recent survey of Pulse Asia, she said that the Binays are considered as the underdogs. “We have always been the underdog. We have been through many trials and we were able to surpass them,” Nancy Binay said.
Nancy’s main focus for the 2013 election is the housing reform and Children’s rights and welfare. Nancy Binay is looking to provide homes and safety to everyone in need, addressing key problems in the housing sector and rectifying issues to ensure that there is a sustainable and reliable poverty database system which would help to identify beneficiaries. She would also see more rights given to children and measures undertaken to ensure the safety and health of even the most at risk kids.
Platforms/Advocacy of Nancy Binay
Nancy Binay is campaigning on a platform of improving housing services and children’s health and education.
She has expressed her strong support for the advocacy for legal adoption of orphans spearheaded nationwide by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Nancy Binay vows to review current adoption laws to “identify bottlenecks in the bureaucracy and speed up the process of legal adoption, without compromising the child’s rights and interests.”
